🍄 EnchantedSpores – Large Monotub Kit Instructions

🌟 What’s Inside Your Large Monotub Kit

  • Food-grade monotub with pre-installed micron filters
  • Black liner (to reduce side-fruits and light exposure)
  • 1 kg fully colonised grain spawn
  • 2 kg sterilised enriched substrate mix
  • Fine-mist water sprayer
  • Alcohol spray bottle
  • Gloves
  • Face mask
  • Instruction card

Everything you need for a clean, beginner-friendly setup.

🧽 Before You Start

Create a clean, calm workspace:

  • Wash hands (or put on gloves)
  • Wipe down the tub and liner with the included alcohol spray
  • Avoid drafts or direct airflow
  • Wear the included mask to avoid breathing directly over your substrate
  • Set the working area at 20–24°C wherever possible

(These conditions help gourmet mycelium maintain a stable environment.)

🪴 Getting the Monotub Ready (Concept Overview)

This kit is designed to be simple:

  1. Prepare the tub Spray the inside lightly with the alcohol spray, then place the black liner inside the tub. Smooth it out so it sits comfortably.
  2. Hydrate the liner Mist the liner with the included water sprayer until evenly damp (not dripping).
  3. Introduce your materials Add your sterilised substrate to the lined tub. Add your colonised grain spawn. (These two components will work together naturally.)
  4. Combine and level Gently mix the grain into the substrate inside the tub. Smooth everything flat so the surface is level. A small reserved amount of substrate can be used as a light top layer.
  5. Close & rest Seal the tub. Place it somewhere with stable temperature and indirect light. The mycelium will begin its natural process over the next couple of weeks.

⏳ The Waiting Phase

The internal environment of the tub encourages:

  • Even colonisation
  • Surface formation
  • Consistent moisture levels
  • A natural transition into fruiting

Most varieties show activity around 10–14 days depending on species.

Do not be tempted to open the Box to look! The CO2 buildup here is vital to the colonisation.

🌤️  Environmental Tips

  • Keep room temperature 20–24°C
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Maintain ambient light (normal room light is fine)
  • Do not aim fans directly at the tub
  • Keep the tub closed during early stages

These conditions mimic the stable forest-floor environment gourmet species prefer.

🍄 About Fruiting

Once the mycelium has settled and conditions are favourable, species typically:

  • Form primordia (“pins”)
  • Begin growing in clusters or shelves
  • Develop characteristic shapes depending on the species (caps, shelves, teeth, fronds)

Different species mature at different speeds and in different shapes.

🔁 Multiple Cycles

Most species naturally produce:

  • 2–4 cycles (“flushes”)
  • First cycle = usually the largest
  • Later cycles = slightly smaller but often more visually textured and interesting

After each cycle, the block may be rehydrated to support a new wave of growth.

💧 How to Rehydrate Between Cycles

You can refresh moisture in the substrate using tools like:

  • Large syringe
  • Turkey baster
  • Or simply adding water directly to the tub when appropriate

Gently introduce clean water around the edges of the block or into naturally formed gaps where moisture has been used up. Allow the block to absorb what it needs, then drain any excess water so the tub doesn’t remain waterlogged.

This rehydration helps the mycelium recover its internal moisture reserve and prepares it for the next natural fruiting cycle.

The tub can then return to the same resting environment as before.

⚠️ Signs of Contamination

If the substrate shows green, black, red, yellow or grey discolouration, or unusual odour, discard the kit responsibly.

This is normal environmental biology and not harmful if handled cleanly.

🧊 If You Need to Store the Kit

Unopened kits may be stored in a cool refrigerator (2–8°C) for up to 4 weeks.

Do not freeze.
